CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON EVENT FRIDAY 28 NOVEMBER 2008

Christmas cracker

An evening of fun entertainment in the wonderfully magical theme of Christmas Carols is planned for this year’s Lights Switch-on. We are pleased to advise that due to the success of the fireworks at last year’s event, another impressive display is being organised. As in previous years, there will be a fair and stage entertainment. Christmas festivity would not be complete without the arrival of Father Christmas, who this year will be located on Station Road. He will park his sleigh at 7.30pm until 8.30pm, and with the help of his special Elves it is hoped all the children will have a chance to meet him and tell him of their Christmas Wishes.

Feast Week and Carnival Day 2008

The Beijing Olympic Games takes place in September this year and is the motivation for the theme of this year’s Feast Week and Carnival. Feast week will commence on Monday 11 August and will finish on Saturday 16 August with the Carnival Procession followed by a fun-filled afternoon at the Coventry Road Recreation Ground.

Lutterworth Town Centre

Lutterworth Town was bustling on Friday evening with many enjoying the late night shopping and entertainment provided for the annual Christmas Lights Switch-on.

On stage the local schools provided entertainment with a host of Christmas songs and in keeping with the Victorian theme hand bell ringers from St Mary’s Church added to the enjoyment. Lutterworth’s Town Mayor Councillor John Turner, accompanied by Feast Week Queen Amy Horne, switched the lights on at 7.30pm. Moments later the town was treated to a wonderful display of fireworks, a new addition to this popular event. Father Christmas and his elves arrived shortly afterwards and distributed sweets to excited children.

Once again many local businesses helped make the event possible.

ASDA ADC donated towards the cost of the entertainment and provided generous prizes for the event. Lidl at Magna Park supplied products and arrived with goodie bags which they distributed during the evening. Disney Store provided prizes for the Christmas Cracker competition. IN Sheds again provided a shed from which to sell hot punch. Hire Tools loaned a generator for the evening.

Refreshments for the marshals were supplied by Neil Green catering, the Community Church organised a soup kitchen and chocolate fountain, Lutterworth Rotary Club sold hot chestnuts and the Lions sold mince pies and hot drinks.

Inside the Town Hall there was a Tombola and Lutterworth Fairtrade Steering Group promoted Fairtrade products. Further music for the evening was provided by the ever popular Aftermath and in the memorial gardens the Lutterworth Town Band and Fosse Brass Ensemble played Christmas carols.

Shop windows in the town were dressed in their best and the traders window competition was won by Fortnams Chemist and Corporate Insurance Solutions with joint 1st prize and the 2nd place was awarded to Whites the Florist.

Many thanks are owed to the Town Council working party, the volunteer marshals, Lutterworth Police and Fire Service and St John’s Ambulance.
